Last Sunday some cadets from 1582 sqn took part in the inter-squadron athletics at Gloucester Park athletics stadium Basildon. For me this would be the third time I have gone, for others it was their first time. The basis of the day is to go out, try your best for your squadron and above all else have fun! You can take part in a maximum of three events, comprising of 1 track and 2 field events or vice versa, plus relay if we’ve got enough for a relay team! If you name an athletics event you can probably take part in it at squadron level. Each cadet there was competing for a medal, squadron points and a chance to represent Essex wing – something that I’m particularly proud of doing.
We arrived at the squadron at 0800 and were taken to the Basildon squadron. Once we got there lots of squadron photos were taken and everybody was either feeling nervous or excited. We went out onto the track for a warm up and a practise for our events. Once everything was underway we sat back and waited. We all cheered as Cdt. Hill and Cdt. Ford-Lissenden managed to get through their event heat and on to the final. We again cheered when Cdt. Hill won two silver medals (one in the 400m and one in the 100m), and again when Cdt. Ford-Lissenden got the silver in the 200m. They will probably represent wing and even region.
A great day was had by all and well done to everyone for turning up and doing their best. A big thank you to all the staff that helped with the day and with the transport.
